Bariatric Surgery

Introduction to Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a safe, effective, and well-established treatment for obesity, helping people lose significant weight and dramatically improve their health and quality of life. These procedures work by altering the digestive system to reduce hunger, limit food intake, and influence the hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism.

On average, patients can expect to lose around 25–35% of their total body weight, depending on the procedure and individual factors. Many also see improvements or complete resolution of weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, and joint pain.

Dr Jess Mok offers evidence-based surgical options as part of a compassionate and personalised approach to long-term weight management.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • The sleeve gastrectomy is a keyhole (laparoscopic) procedure that significantly reduces the size of your stomach, reshaping it into a narrow tube or “sleeve.” Around 75–80% of the stomach is removed through a small incision, leaving behind a smaller stomach roughly the size and shape of a banana. This helps reduce the amount of food you can eat and lowers levels of hunger hormones such as ghrelin.

    • Effective and sustainable weight loss (typically 25–30% total body weight)

    • Reduced appetite and improved satiety

    • Improvement or resolution of type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure

    • No re-routing of the intestines, preserving natural digestion

    • Shorter operating time and hospital stay compared to bypass procedures

    • The Sleeve can effectively improve or even resolve a variety of obesity-related conditions, such as:

      • Diabetes & Insulin resistance

      • PCOS

      • Infertility

      • Heart disease

      • Sleep apnea

Roux-en-y gastric bypass

  • The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a well-established, laparoscopic procedure that works by creating a small stomach pouch and bypassing a portion of the small intestine. This reduces the amount of food you can eat and limits calorie and nutrient absorption. It also influences gut hormones to help reduce hunger and improve blood sugar control.

    • Significant weight loss (typically 30–35% total body weight)

    • Excellent results in type 2 diabetes (often leading to remission)

    • Helpful for acid reflux (often improves or resolves symptoms)

    • Long-term data supporting safety and effectiveness

    • Especially suitable for patients with severe obesity or multiple health conditions

  • Gastric Bypass can effectively improve or even resolve a multitude of obesity-related conditions, such as:

    • Acid reflux

    • Diabetes & Insulin resistance

    • PCOS

    • Infertility

    • Heart disease

    • Sleep apnea

One anastomosis gastric bypass (mini gastric bypass)

  • The Mini Gastric Bypass is a simplified version of the traditional bypass, involving one connection (anastomosis) between the stomach and small intestine. A small, tube-shaped stomach is created and connected further down the intestine, reducing food intake and absorption while also altering gut hormones involved in hunger and metabolism.

    • Effective weight loss (comparable to or slightly more than RYGB)

    • Excellent outcomes in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome

    • Shorter operation time and slightly lower risk of complications

    • May be suitable for revision surgery or higher BMI patients

Note: May not be suitable for patients with significant acid reflux.

  • Gastric Bypass can effectively improve or even resolve a multitude of obesity-related conditions, such as:

    • Acid reflux

    • Diabetes & Insulin resistance

    • PCOS

    • Infertility

    • Heart disease

    • Sleep apnea
